Open Workshops – Call to Reserve

Open workshops offer the student the freedom to schedule their preferred hours to work on their personal project at their own pace.

This is a pay as you go opportunity for students to continue their studies in a variety of disciplines. Guitar building and Amp building students often take advantage of these time slots to progress with their projects. We tailor each session to the project at hand. Students may choose to work on their own or with an instructor to guide them.

These workshops are open access by appointment between 1 pm and 9 pm on consecutive days during the week and on some weekends.

Register for Open Workshop by PHONE or in PERSON ONLY.  Call to reserve your preferred block of time between 1 pm and 9 pm during the days schedule by phone or in person. Open workshop access is limited, first come first served.

Workshop Fee is $40/hr and includes:

  • Work Space – An opportunity to work at your own pace, on your project.

Workshop Fee with tutelage is $80/hr and includes:

  • Shop training – Receive tutorials on various procedures and shop safety.
  • Instruction and guidance from an experienced instructor.

Ian Schneller is the founder and chief instructor of the Chicago School of Guitar Making. With over 800 handmade instruments bearing his Specimen name, he brings a wellspring of knowledge to the classroom with the mission of perpetuating the tradition of handcraft and design innovation. He has shown his work in a variety of museums around the country and is a faculty member of the Sculpture Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Come by the shop during business hours and enroll using cash, credit card, or a personal check.


Open shop hours are held from 1 pm – 9 pm for a period of consecutive days each month. Check the calendar for upcoming hours. Time is reserved on a first come, first served basis and must be scheduled by phone or in person.

Business Hours:

Monday – Friday: 12 – 7pm, Saturday: 12 – 5pm
